How to Avoid Burnout as a Busy Freelancer

As a freelancer, you have the freedom to work your own hours. But if you’re
overworked and feel like you’re burning out, you might need to take a step back
from the craziness of freelancing to give yourself a chance to recharge your
batteries. It’s all too common for busy freelancers to burn out – especially when they
feel overwhelmed by their workload.

Freelancers can be susceptible to feeling overwhelmed and burned out due to the
fact that they do everything themselves (finding clients, invoicing, managing the
workload, and more). This means there are no coworkers or colleagues to rely on for
support or brainstorm ideas with. Plus, if something unexpected pops up on the
calendar, it can throw off your planned workflow and leave you feeling behind in
your work.

Unpredictable income can also make it challenging to manage the stress of a busy
workload, particularly if you’re working in a low season. It’s tempting to say “yes” to
any client that comes your way in order to maintain a steady flow of work, but this
can lead to an unhealthy and unsustainable work-life balance.

If you’re feeling the early warning signs of burnout, it’s important to recognize them
so that you can act before it’s too late. This can be anything from a general feeling
of tiredness and irritability to physical health problems or anxiety.
To combat the symptoms of burnout, focus on making small changes to your routine.
This can be as simple as organising your workspace, prioritising ergonomics for your
health, or investing in tools that help you get more done with less effort. It’s also
helpful to find ways to decrease your stress levels.

For example, try experimenting with task batching – completing similar tasks at once (like article outlining) or time- tracking techniques like the Pomodoro technique, which can help you to understand how long it takes you to complete each project.
It’s also important to recognise that freelance burnout isn’t just about work. It’s
about the overall well-being of your mind, body, and soul. If you’re struggling with
these feelings, it might be time to talk to a mental health professional.
